I share with you today pictures taken by me for the Abbasid mosque of Zumurrud Khatun the mother of Abbasid khalik Al-Nasir and wife of Al-Mustadi
The mosque was built in 1202 A.D, it’s minaret is considered the oldest standing minaret in the city of Baghdad. The minaret design is from the Seljuq dynasty era and consists of nine layers of muqarnas standing on octagonal base.
The mosque is regarded as an important Islamic heritage site for the city of Baghdad. But as for other important Iraqi landmarks it’s neglected by the authorities. Since 2003 the mosque was subjected to multiple threats and was a scene for countless stories of the Iraqi sorrow film, from the coalition bombings to the sectarian war tragedies.
I leave you with more photos now…
